Ethylene oxide is often used, pure or mixed with inert gases, in low temperature sterilization of medical plastic items which do not resist to steam sterilization temperature (+/- 135°C ): syringes, catheters, prostheses, tubing, blood bags etc...

Ethylene oxide is also used for paper and fabric disinfection.
