Methyl chloride (CH3Cl) or monochloromethane also known as R40, is a colorless gas with an ethereal odor, heavier than air.


It's used in the chemical industry as a methylation agent in organic synthesis, for tetra methyl lead, silicones, and butyl rubber production, as a solvent or extraction agent for heat sensitive products as well as a refrigerant and propellant.
